I asked God for strength, that I might achieve
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey…

I was given life, that I might enjoy all things…
「人生を楽しむために あらゆるものを求めたのに
あらゆるものをいつくしむために 人生を授かった」
I got nothing that I asked for―but everything I had hoped for
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men, most richly blessed!

この詩は、ニューヨーク大学の壁に掲げられていて、１４０年前に
アメリカの南北戦争に従軍した南軍の兵士が記したものといわれている。
中日新聞で紹介されて大きな反響があったとか。
